Locations & Activities – Southland

Some of the activities in Southland region:

  • One of our favourite drives is the 45 minutes to Maple Glen Gardens, a hidden treasure in the rolling pastures of Eastern Southland. It is 25 acres of private garden, nursery, aviary and woodland in a small valley. It is open most days of the year and always offers something to surprise the senses, no matter what season of the year you visit. It is consistently rated one of the top gardens in NZ and has appeared in numerous gardening publications.

  • Take a 25-minute drive to Bluff, the gateway to Stewart Island. Take a photo of the famous signpost at Stirling Point. The start of State Highway 1. Stroll on the easy walking tracks which provide spectacular views of Stewart Island and Foveaux Strait. In season sample one of the world famous Bluff oysters.

  • Drive 45 minutes to Riverton, one of NZ’s oldest towns, a seaside haven with safe swimming beaches and peaceful walks. It has superb cafes to while away the hours and has several craft shops and galleries showing a variety of local crafts, Maori crafts and paua jewellery.

  • Travel 45 minutes inland to the rural town of Gore. The Hokonui Moonshine Museum gives an insight into the illegal whisky distilling era, while the Art Gallery houses fine art from around the world, including the John Money collection. For the daring, soar the skies in a Tiger Moth at the Mandeville Airport, home to the Croydon Aircraft Company, world leaders in the restoration of vintage aircraft.

  • Experience the world-renowned Catlins coast less than an hours drive from Beersheba. It provides a wealth of scenic adventures from the beauty of sweeping beaches to towering cliffs to the history of a petrified forest and old lighthouse. See sea lions and dolphins frolic in the surf, seals basking on rocks and possibly catch a glimpse of the rare yellow-eyed penguin.

  • Take a plane from Invercargill or catch the ferry from Bluff for a days excursion on Stewart Island, Rakiura National Park. This Bush clad island is home to many native birds including kiwi.
